The family is wealthy and well-connected in Hamburg\u2019s art and cultural scene. The portraits and self-portraits of Anita R\u00e9es were intriguing Hamburg&#8217;s society back then and still impress today with their subtlety and depth. In her pictures, she approaches the foreign, the strange in other places, other people and herself. The thematic focus of her work is the existential question of one\u2019s own identity.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\t<section class=\"block block-headline margin-bottom-third\" >\n\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-md-offset-3 col-md-6\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"box \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class='stagger-item'>\u201cShe draws like a man!\u201d <\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"block block-copy  copy-small bg-no \">\n\t\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-md-offset-3 col-md-6\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"box\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"copy\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>are said to be the words painter\u2019s colleague Franz N\u00f6lken used to comment on R\u00e9es extraordinary skills. Her work is also well received elsewhere: In the 1920s and early 1930s, R\u00e9e exhibited in Hamburg, Paris and Positano, Italy. Her works even made it to Scandinavia and Cambridge, England.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\t<section class=\"block block-headline margin-bottom-third\" >\n\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-md-offset-3 col-md-6\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"box \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class='stagger-item'>Political Persecution under National Socialism<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"block block-copy  copy-small bg-no \">\n\t\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-md-offset-3 col-md-6\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"box\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"copy\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>However, with the rise of National Socialism in Germany, the artist\u2019s success ceased. Although R\u00e9e grew up Protestant, her Jewish descent became her undoing. Commissions were withdrawn and in 1933 she was expelled from the Hamburg Art Society as a member &#8220;foreign to the species&#8221;. She had already left the city by that time. Her works were deemed \u201cbastardly\u201d and degenerate and were to be removed from the collection rooms of the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 1937. By then, however, they were already in a safe hiding place: Wilhelm Werner, the caretaker of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, had secretly taken them to his own apartment in the summer of the same year.
